Today is National Entrepreneurs’ Day, the grand finale to National Entrepreneurship Week, as proclaimed by President Barack Obama. I found this proclamation to be exciting and encouraging for many reasons.
The first is because this campaign was brought to life through an online petition and lobbied through to the President using Twitter and Facebook. It should be noted that the current President of the United States is the first to use social media, which is also exciting! Take a moment to read the full story of how National Entrepreneurs’ Day came to be; it’s a real testament to the power of social media marketing.
The second thing that’s exciting is that as a collective group, entrepreneurs represent what is truly great about our country. As stated in the official proclamation, “Entrepreneurs embody the promise that lies at the heart of America — that if you have a good idea and work hard enough, the American dream is within your reach
President Obama noted that the passion and hard work of people running small business are what will drive our economy forward as we move out of the recession. In fact, in 2009, half off all private sector employment came through small businesses, according to research by SCORE. So, I would also like to share in recognizing and congratulating the more than 400,000 entrepreneurs in the Constant Contact family — through your dedicated efforts, you power not only your own businesses, but also our country’s economic engine.
When David Lyman and I started NutshellMail, we didn’t think of ourselves as entrepreneurs. We were just a couple of guys who were passionate about the potential of social media for small businesses. We wanted to help solve the problem small businesses face when trying to keep track of all the different social media tools available to them. Developing a solution to the problem was exhilarating, and knowing that we were helping small businesses to save time and build deeper relationships with their customers made all the hard work and sacrifice worth it.
I fervently believe that we all have an inner entrepreneur. To be an entrepreneur, you do not have to quit your job, mortgage your home, and hire a rocket scientist to develop the greatest thing since sliced bread 2.0. We all have the ability to identify a problem or challenge, and then use our passion and energy to create a solution.
Entrepreneurial opportunities happen every day, and we all have the ability to make an impact. What separates the entrepreneur from the dreamer is execution and seeing things through. That entrepreneurial spirit is what drives our economy, and I am proud to live in a country and work for a company that holds entrepreneurism in such high regard.
In keeping with the heart of the campaign to bring National Entrepreneurs’ Day to reality through social media, I would like to hear from you. How is your company using social media to grow your business and how did you implement your program? If your company doesn’t use social media, I would like to pose a challenge: In the spirit of this special day, harness your inner entrepreneur and create a solution to bring social media to your business.
