You see, science isn't just a subject in school – at least it doesn't need to be. Recently a man came up to me and thanked me excitedly. To be honest, I didn't recognize him. Then he explained that about six years ago, I had taught a science workshop that his son participated in.

His son was doing very poorly in all his subjects at the time (I think he was in 6th grade). He continued to tell me that after the workshop, his son had developed a fascination with science (airplanes in particular). His grades in school got better, and in science, he was getting A's and B's. Then the man straightened up and smiled. He said “My boy just started college in Aeronautical Engineering!”

It turns out, six years ago he was looking ahead and worrying that his son might not even finish high school. Like I said, science can be so much more than just a subject to teach your kids.

Since 1996, Aurora Lipper has been helping families learn science. As a pilot, astronomer, engineer, rocket scientist, science teacher and former university instructor, Aurora can transform toilet paper tubes into real working radios and make walking robots from junk in the back of a desk drawer.

Our mission is to support science education among kids in a way that is engaging, fun and highly effective.

If you haven't already done so, go ahead and download the Science Activity Guide from: http://www.superchargedscience.com/frwb097...

It is filled with enough experiments to get any kids totally engaged and excited for days. Work through the experiments with your kids (or if they like to work on their own, just give it to them). Your job is to notice not only that they are engaged in the experiments, but also that they are learning academic stuff without realizing it.
