Unemployment Gap Between Blacks and Whites Keeps Growing (1160 hits)

By: Dr. Boyce Watkins
The recent unemployment data issued by the Bureau of Labor Statistics was met with some degree of optimism by the Obama Administration. The discussion centered around the fact that the unemployment rate for the nation dropped to 9.4 percent, it's lowest since May of 2009. Good news, right? Well, it's very good news if you're white.

A closer analysis of the data reveals some interesting and disturbing trends. First, white males were the greatest and primary beneficiaries of the dip in unemployment, as their rate declined from 9.1 percent to 8.5 percent, the steepest drop among men or women of black or white ethnicities. White women also saw a significant decline in their unemployment rate, from 7.5 percent to 7.3 percent (they already had the lowest unemployment rate of men or women from both ethnicities).

That's not all. Even though blacks and whites both saw a decline in their unemployment rates, whites saw a dip that was three times greater than that for African Americans. The overall white unemployment rate dropped from 8.9 percent to 8.5 percent, while the black unemployment rate dropped slightly from 16 percent to 15.8 percent. The raw differences are only double when compared directly, but are far more significant when considering the fact that white unemployment was already a little more than half of that for black Americans. Therefore, the absolute value of the difference is double for whites, but becomes three times greater than blacks when considering the relative change. The point is that (as President Obama so famously put it) the "rising tide" is not raising all ships, and the gap is actually growing.

As of November 2010, black unemployment was 80 percent higher than white unemployment. After December, the gap rose to a scaled differential of 86 percent. The white/black unemployment gap grew for both black men and black women. For men it grew the most: In November, black men had an unemployment rate that was 82 percent higher than whites (16.6 percent to 9.1 percent), and as of December, there was a scaled differential of 94 percent (16.5 percent to 8.5 percent).

For black women, the gap between black and white females grew from 75 percent last month (13.1 percent to 7.5 percent) to 81 percent this month (13.2 percent to 7.3 percent). So, the racial unemployment gap grew for both genders, with black men getting the worst of the divide.

The only group of African Americans that saw a significant scaled decline in their unemployment rate were black teens, who saw a drop from 46.3 percent to 44.2 percent unemployment. The gap between black and white teens narrowed, from 119 percent to a 96 percent difference. The improvements for black teens are tempered by the fact that black teenagers continue to have the highest unemployment rate of any subgroup of the population, and they are also the greatest victims of racial disparities in unemployment data. So, at best, we can say that a horrible situation was made slightly less horrible than it was before.

As I prepare to speak on NPR tomorrow with Rev. Al Sharpton about these data and my open letter to President Obama penned just a few months ago, a few thoughts come to mind. This must be the year that our elected officials are continuously reminded of the fact that dealing with unemployment for the entire nation is not the same as dealing with economic inequality. While I am not always in complete sync with my respected colleague Michael Eric Dyson, who gave Obama a C- on black issues, I am certainly inclined to agree with Professor Dyson on the fact that neither the president nor any of the Chicago cronies he's hired in Washington are in a position to care in the least bit about the urban poor. Obama's decision to hire Bill Daley as his Chief of Staff speaks to the reality that neither this White House nor this Congress seems concerned about dealing with economic inequality in America.

Unless the day comes where targeted policies are created to close the employment and wealth gaps, we are going to continue to live in a world where African Americans are asked to remain silent about double-digit employment, while white Americans are privileged enough to yell and scream about seven percent joblessness. Perhaps it's time for us to wake up and smell the disparity.

Hello to all,

Anita, would you please explain to me why it should surprise you that the unemployment for Black Americans is greater than it is for Whites?
I am asking the question because I know White America owns and runs this country; so naturally, White America has a natural responsibility to care for their race first. Does that make sense to you? However, if we were a sovereign people on a fertile portion of this continent that we could call our very own country with borders then we would be making the decisions for ourselves, am I right. Black Americans did not make any decision that cause White America's economy to fall into a recession. Black Americans do not make any decisions that have a direct impact on our lives. Black Americans have been in this plight over 500 years. So, why should it surprise you that more Blacks are unemployed then Whites?

I see your blog as no more than whining and complaining. Why would you not accept God offer of sovereignty that would put a permanent end to you whining and complaining of your people and your inferior circumstances?

Everything that I am saying you know I am right. In addition, everything that I say is going to happen. I am the way, and besides me, there is no other way that Black Americans could become a real people in this world. I have that divine mission of leading us into sovereignty on a fertile portion of this continent that we could call our very own country with borders.

Tell me what you think.

Harry, Harry, As you can see, this writing is by Dr. Boyce Watkins who is an activist on the front line fighting and marching for the rights of African Americans along with Rev. Al, a hell of a lot more I might add than just talking about finding some place for blacks to run to, which will never happen. Its only whining when thats all you do, but when you throw it in someone's face and show them you're not going to settle for it, then its simply a factual statement put out to the opposition to let them know, we know what they are attempting to do.
Harry may you lead your so called followers in peace. I'm sure all of you guys will end up no where like the rest of the Jim Jones of the world. Peace!

I have always thought these 'blackie/whitie" things are MISLEADING.

If you take Educational, Experience and Family Income Figures of 5-10 years----the only American differences are based on Educational, Experience and Family Income Figures of 5-10 years---

I dispise CRY babies even if they have a Dr. in front of their names---most of the time they got the Dr. so that they could Demonize or Demoralize their own communitites---

I am NEVER with 68IQharry; but on this idea of crying 'blackiethis, whitiethat' -- stop the whining...........

Why should you be any different than you've already presented yourself on past post. Of course you would say the Dr. was whining instead of using the power of the pulpit and the power behind his words causing the impossible to happen. That's the problems with African Americans over the past hundreds of years. We didn't as you put it whine enough about anything. We just took what was dished out and kept on going staying in our place so to speak. Far and few leaders along the way caused changes and only when they again as you put it whined. They were then thrust into the limelight where they preceded to make a difference. I guess you would then say all African American leaders have been nothing but whiners. Sorry to tell you but whiners make huge differences. Maybe both of you guys should go into the neighborhoods and try to make a difference or maybe march, and then you would see that there's a lot to whine about!
This disparaging divide should not be accepted in the year 2011.

Hello Anita,

Anita I have many problems to resolve concerning Black Americans since I am Black America's first genuine prophet.
One of these problems is getting Black Americans to understand that they are not African Americans. Knowing precisely who you are tells the world you have some sort of intelligence and you are ready to become a sovereign people, am I right.

Now you are making it clear that your blog is the view of Dr. Boyce Watkins and does not necessarily reflect your views. Well, if that is the case why did you post Dr. Watkins view at all if you did not sympathize with him? You need to get on track and decide which side of the fence that you are on, okay. I do not care for foolishness. Intelligent dialogues are uplifting to me. So, please decide whether you support Dr. Watkins' view or not.

Right now we are not talking of out Jim Jones. We are talking about the unemployment gap of Blacks versus Whites since that is what Dr. Watkins is talking about, am I right.

Dr. Watkins is whining and complaining that Blacks unemployment is proportionately greater than it is for Whites, am I right. Subsequently, my replied was what the big deal is since Black Americans have always been on the bottom and that Whites have a natural responsibility to take care of their own first, right.
For example, if reading and writing were a security threat to White Americans obviously Whites would never have allowed Black Americans to read and write. Am I making any sense? So, common sense would tell you that Black Americans are not in the position to do anything good for ourselves, right. So, my question to you was why is it such a surprise to you that more Whites have jobs while more Blacks do not?

Lastly, I said to you that Black America's only permanent solution is that we must desire to become a sovereign people on a fertile portion of this continent that we could call our very own country with borders to worship God, pursue life, liberty, happiness and prosperity in our own way. You said our sovereignty would never happen. Consequentially, the frame of mind that you have is why our sovereignty would never happen.

The children of Israel had the same mindset. Moses persistently hammered away until finally with God help the children of Israel minds began to rationalize that what Moses was saying was their only option and the Exodus happened, am I right.

Black Americans must have sovereignty and if you think our sovereignty will never happen then your protesting, whining and complaining will be endless, am I right. Anita what you think would never happen is why you must believe that it will happen or else Black Americans will always be in this dehumanizing and inferior condition. Likewise, if the Exodus was not possible for the children of Israel their protesting, whining and complaining would have been endless as well. You need to wake up Anita.

Our only permanent solution is that we must desire to become a sovereign people on a portion of this continent that we could call our very own country with borders. Our sovereignty is going to happen. Everything that I tell you is going to happen, I know.

As a matter of fact, what Black Americans need to hear if you will is something that they think is impossible. When we think of the impossible we should think of God since God make all things possible. God made the Exodus possible for the children of Israel, am I right. Our thinking of the impossible will ratchet up and altar the way we have been thinking for the past 500 years using our slave mentality. Am I making any sense?

Anita, in time to come all Black leaders including Mr. Farrakhan, Dr. Boyce Watkins and Rev. Al Sharpton are going to follow me since I am Black America's first genuine prophet. It will take a prophet to lead us out of this 500 year old mess and not a civil rights activist.

Tell me what you think.

Harry, since we're on the subject of unemployment, I have a question, do you have any jobs/employment for people who are descendants of slaves in your sovereign nation on a portion of this continent with borders?

Yeah I knew it...thanks again for proving my point about you being a false prophet (LOL)..

Siebra Muhammad
Harry you are so wrong, I have shown you many times how your genealogy drives your future and you have ignored it by your silence. WOW! If you were indeed a prophet, you would be doing something in our communities to uplift our people and move them out of their current circumstances.
I am African American, Born in America with African lineage. I traced my ancestors, have you? I think I have a clearer understanding of who I am than you.
I never said I didnít agree with Dr. Boyce, because indeed I do. I simply said it wasnít my post, my words, but a comrade instead. Foolishness was never my strong suit. Sorry, Harry but as you can see with my personal post, there was no hesitation on my part in my agreement with Dr. Boyce. When you talk about separating a people for whatever it is you think you need to do, that is a Jim Jones syndrome.
Back to the unemployment gap, you say ďwhites have a natural responsibility to take care of their own firstĒ, then shouldnít that be the mindset of every African American person? We havenít always been on the bottom; history shows you different, again the reason for the attempt to keep us there. Blacks have excelled in every instance that they have been given the opportunity to do so.
Whites didnít allow us to read and write. We demanded that privilege. Harry you and I know history shows we learned under very extreme circumstances. White are in positions of power, is one of the reasons more whites have jobs. Thatís why we have to create for our own and continue to spend black. 500 billion is spent in the black community each year. If that money was siphoned back into our communities like other nationalities do, we wouldnít be facing this problem now. It is a learned behavior that got us into this and it will be a taught behavior that will get us out. I donít want to be sovereign anywhere, just equal to and living in peace and harmony.
Isnít when Jesus comes back, we are going to do just that? or donít you believe in the Savior coming back Harry? What say you? My frame of mind is what is taking me and mines to a higher level of prosperity and I intend to help a lot more do just that. Harry Blacks have to take the impossible and make the possible every day. Look at our sisters in the hood just getting by, but are responsible for putting the plate on the table every day. Are you serious!
You are right, WOW the first we agree. We should rely on God to make all things possible, which is how I live my life and how I take each footstep, every day of my life. No slave mentality here.
Harry if all the leaders and activist will be following you one day, pray tell when and where will this take place and what are you doing towards that effort now. I donít see you anywhere, (in print, TV, on the circuit, magazine articles, the internet) absolutely anywhere. You are virtually an unknown. What say you Harry? Make it clear.

@Sister Siebra, Harry hasn't gone no further in just that one thought in his mind. No where, when, how or what these supposedly people are going to do after they get to this invisible place. That don't matter. I guess he's going to provide everything, after all he is a prophet.

Hello Siebra,

Siebra I am not to provide jobs for Black Americans. I am divinely anointed to correct more than our unemployment dilemma. My divine anointing is turning Black Americans into a nation that the sovereign nations of the world will recognize.
Likewise, Moses was not anointed to provide jobs for the children of Israel. Moses like me what anointed to lead the children of Israel out of bondage and slavery in Egypt and that is much bigger than resolving the unemployment of the children of Israel, am I right.

Our sovereign nation is not mines; it is ours as a nation of people. The Promise Land was not Moses Promised Land. The Promised Land belonged to all of the children of Israel.

Why do you say these dumb things?

Tell me what you think.

Hello Anita,

Anita, I do not understand what you mean when you say that our genealogy drives our future. Please explain.

Secondly, you are not an African-American. An African-American is a pedigree African that has become a United States citizen. An example of African Americans is the Nigerian community in Houston, Texas. Likewise, the late Mr. Alex Haley was not an African-American even though he traced his roots back to Gambia Africa. Mr. Alex Haley was a Black American. We know this because Whites are in his family tree.
Africans and Black Americans are entirely too different people and to different races. Black Americans are a new race of people born out of the ashes of slavery when White Americans bred themselves with the first wave of pedigree African slaves they purchase from the slave traders.

Anita, I want you to understand that nothing will work for Black Americans while we live in White America. Likewise, Moses understood that nothing will work for the children of Israel while they lived in Egypt. Do you understand the comparison and contrast that I constantly draw when I use the plight of the children of Israel while they were in bondage and slavery in Egypt? If you sincerely do understand then you should not be arguing with me, am I right.

We have to get out of our plight permanently and getting out of this plight that we are in demand and that we become a sovereign people on a portion of this continent that we could call our very own country with borders. For anything to work for Black Americans we must have the reigns of our own destiny in our hands, am I right.

Our sovereignty is not negotiable. Likewise, the Exodus of the children of Israel was not negotiable either. Do you see my point?

Only one person can speak to you as I do and that person has to be our genuine prophet because it will take an act of God to bring about what I am saying concerning our sovereignty on a portion of this continent that we could call our very own country with borders. Am I wrong or am I right? Am I making sense or am I not make sense?

Anyway, please explain to me what you mean by our genealogy drives our future.

Tell me what you think.

Hello Harry,

I graduated valedictorian of my Business Studies class in college, so I am nowhere near dumb. I believe the truth of Anita's comments has kicked you squarely between your two eyes. In other words, YOU are dumb. This is why you are dumb. We have no evidence that you are who you claim to be, am I right.

And since you say you are not here to provide jobs for Black Americans, that means you cannot be who you say you are and you obviously cannot lead us into the Promised Land, am I right. I certainly would think you would have jobs/employment to offer our Black people since you say your religion is LIFE.

You are the one saying dumb things, you apply no logic whatsoever to the things you say. As far as I'm concerned you are just a person who gets a kick out of hearing themselves talk, am I right?

Tell me what you think.

Harry we are in a different time. Siebra is right. How can you turn a people into a nation if you donít have answers to lead them out of their current dilemma? Weíre in our promised land right now, until God comes, so we have to make the best of what we have here. This world is not what God created for us, but what man/flesh has done in his infinite selfishnessÖ. A vortex of hell.
When I say our genealogy drives us, thatís to say what we once were should let you know where you could be once again, or what is to be your ultimate destiny. My history tells me I came from substance, kings and queens who were strong, infinite in wisdom, beautiful to look upon, so I consider myself a African goddess, look at me Harry, is that not what you see? I also now know where I got my creativeness from, why I excelled in certain academics and not in others, why I have a peaceful nature etc. All these things are traced back to my geneology. Well I guess that pedigree African and I have something in common. We are both now African Americans. It doesnít matter if our blood is diluted, we are still African American. Have you taken a look at my pictures posted here and my children all traced to my ancestry. My grandfather is half white, but Iím still black/African American. Do you not think there are no Europeans in Africa. Sorry but out of 1 billion people in Africa 6.5 million are white, so Iím pretty sure there are mixed heritage people in Africa also, but that still makes them black, and remember not all slaves were cross bred.
This country doesnít belong to Europeans. If you want to be real about it, it was taken from the Indians and built on the backs of blacks. God guided Moses out of Egypt because the children of Israel were enslaved and in bondage, a grave difference from where we are today. We have a choice in our lives.
Harry Iím arguing with you because what you are saying is not even comprehensible. Youíve offered no answers for our people, not even an obtainable exit plan . I could see if you were trying to create a community for instance like what muslims, jews and even mormoms have done all over this world, but to say we have to be a separate nation from white America makes no sense.
I speak to God every day, and he hasnít showed me any of what you say. Even if I thought for one moment you were in your complete mind, I could maybe agree with some of your analogies, but I and everyone else see you as a sort of delusional man who is kind of lost in your thinking. Iím not trying to be mean, itís not my nature, but Iím real.
You are right on point about one thing, it will take an act of God to put into existence what youíre always talking about.

Hello Siebra,

I would believe that you graduated valedictorian. However, I think you are not as bright when it comes to putting the pieces of a puzzle together to see a clear picture and do the right thing based on the picture you see.
For instance, I tell you that God all ways matched the race of the prophet to the race of his people. God matched Prophet Mohammed up with the Arabian people. Revelations were revealed in Arabic to Prophet Mohammed because Prophet Mohammed spoke Arabic. Naturally, the Quran belongs to the Arabian people. Okay, here is where your common sense or lack of common sense takes over that will determine what sort of picture the puzzle is dependent on how many pieces you have put together.

Now, I tell you that you are being ignorant big time to follow Prophet Mohammed, Islam and the Arabian people when you are a Black American woman and not an Arabian woman. Yet, you would take these facts which are the pieces to the puzzle and just throw them away. So, when you throw away the pieces that would tell you whether I am right or wrong then I know that you are not a bright woman even though you could have passed all the your business tests and graduated valedictorian. Do you see my point?

I can not understand that you would think one of my divine responsibilities is to ensure White Americans employs Black Americans! Are you out of your cotton picking dumb mind! My divine mission is to lead Black Americans out of subjugation and into sovereignty on a fertile portion of this continent that we could call our very own country with borders to worship God, pursue life, liberty, happiness and prosperity in our own way. God anointed me with an answer that would permanently solve Black America's unemployment status in White America. If you were bright your mind would know I am not a civil rights activist. I am Black Americans first genuine prophet. I am the way, and besides me, Black Americans could never become a real people in this world. You can not be sovereign free in our own country and at the same time want White Americans to employ us. We have but one choice and that is to be sovereign. However, all those that do not want to be sovereign they will perish as the children of Israel perished in the desert. There will be a new generation of our people going into our sovereign country.

What say you?

Hello Anita,

Anita, you say how I could turn my people into a nation if I don't have answers to lead us out of our present dilemma. Anita, I do not understand how you could ask me such a question when I have been telling all of you for the past two years that our only permanent solution is that we must desire to become a sovereign people on a fertile portion of this continent that we could call our very own country with borders.
We are going to inherit a fertile portion of this continent and we must be mentally prepared to hit the ground running. You must come to realizes why sovereignty is our only permanent solution. You must come to breathe sovereignty. You must come to believe in God and our anointed prophet. You have a good start already when you said that it would take an act of God to bring about what I have been telling you all; therefore, your belief in God is going to be tested. I know that it will take an act of God and the first act that God did was anointing me to tell you these things are going to happen. Am I making any sense with you? The same thing that I am asking of you all is what Moses asked of the children of Israel to do and then the Exodus happen.

Anita, no Black American descended from Kings and Queens and Africa. We are descendents of plantation slaves. We are neither Africans know all we Caucasians. We are the people that came from when White Americans bred themselves with the first wave of African slaves over a period of 300 years that ended after the Civil War. As Black America's first genuine prophet I know precisely who we are. All genuine prophets know who their people are.

Lastly, the reason you may see me delusional is because what I am telling you is going to divinely happen for us is so unbelievable to you that you classify it as being delusional, am I right. Anita, everything that I say is going to happen. Everything that I say about myself is true. I am Black America's first genuine prophet. I am the way for Black Americans, and besides me, there is no other way for Black Americans to ever become a real people in this world.

The decision that you and everybody makes after hearing me will have a direct impact on your life, your children's life and our future. Either you all will desire to become a sovereign people or you will perish as the children of Israel did in the desert. I am the real deal.

Tell me what you think

Harry for the last time, How can you desire something so foreign as what you have proposed without an action plan. If you canít take care of business where you live, how you gonna live somewhere else and take care of business. Iím mentally prepared for when Jesus comes and Iím fighting and standing until that time comes. The Act of God does not entail moving to this god forsaken land you describe, and have no idea where it even is etc, etc,etc Is the government going to give it to you. Are you asking for a handout?
Harry its like talking to a dead horse. You hear absolutely nothing, and to think you could possibly be a very important man in your own right, cause you are so ostensibly straight forward in your thinking, repeating that same sentence youíve been using for years, but its old and stale and apparently no one is listening, so its time to come up with faze 2.
If you only knew your history and further more embraced it, do you know how powerful a concept that is, and how powerful that would make you? You are a genuine something, but its not a prophet. If you believe this to come true than so be it for your sake Harry, because itís something no one else ever will. Sorry! On to more discussions. Iím through with this one.
